Due to my perhaps irrational, but nontheless firmly held view that any car, train, bus or bicycle charged with the responsibility of getting me to an commercial vehicle due to take off at a specific time is apt to fail and make me miss said vehicle, we ordered a taxi to pick us up at the flat at 2 am for the am bus departure for Kaunas. I had called to order the taxi, but feeling uncertain, had called Audrone to call and confirm that I had done it right. Perhaps the taxi company sensed my fears, because the taxi arrived at 1:45. We got loaded up and arrived at the Acropolis parking lot at 2:10. The driver let us off beside a mercedes mini bus and we settled down to wait. Del perched himself on a nearby concrete trash can holder, and I sat myself down on the curb and pulled out old Earl Hamner, Jr. I turned on the light in the cover (thanks for the cover suggestion, Sandy) and continued to read about the bicycle trip to India. Don't worry about Del. Since I have this habit of reading to him whether he wants me to or not, he was not left only to his thoughts.
Other passengers, should I say those without spouses who are hyper concerned about getting where they are going, arrived between 2:45 and 2:59, and we pulled out at 3. Not having gone to bed that night, we dozed off and on and arrived at the airport at 5:30. By the time we got through the survey lady and the line, we had just time to visit the WC and we were on our way. Ryanair must pay someone extra to put a bar in the seats lined up just right to hit the main buttocks nerve, whatever it is called. One would have assumed my assume would have had enough padding that this would not have bothered me, but apparently not. Lord help those skinny Lithuanian ladies. Other than that, the flight was fine. I am always a little disconcerted when people clap when the plane lands, wondering what I failed to detect that they noticed, but we are here.
Our hotel is quite pleasant, and the bed is beautifully firm. We thought we would take a brief nap, but woke just in time for an early breakfast/lunch/dinner. The hotel reception lady had recommended a restaurant just down the way and we had a delightful meal. The owner organized our meal for us. He was very eager we try his fish soup, so much so that he served us half portions and we had a salad, calamari with fries and grilled shrimp with rice. It was all delicious. Del had local beer and I had local wine, perhaps a mistake given my banana, four crackers and half a snickers bar intake since my ham sandwich dinner the night before, but hey, we are on vacation. We were getting ready to ask for the check when he insisted he had something sweet for us. It was lovely thick Greek yogurt with a grape sauce. He said if we came in and requested a day in advance, he would stuff squid for us. The day in advance because he would have to order the whole squid for stufing.
We walked home and were asleep by nine, I think. The air blowing in from the window was so fresh and cool. Not at all hot like when we were here in July. Of course we were only here in the day, but it was not hot in the middle of the day today either.
